How to Get the Most Out of Your Soy Wax Scented Candles

Thank you for choosing our handcrafted soy wax scented candles! To ensure you get the best scent throw and longest burn time, follow these simple yet essential tips.

1. First Burn – Setting the Memory

Soy wax burns more slowly than paraffin wax, which means proper burning habits are essential for the best experience.

The first time you light your candle is crucial. Soy wax has a “memory,” meaning it will only burn as far as it did on the first use. Allow your candle to burn for at least 2–3 hours, or until the melted wax reaches the edges of the tin. This prevents tunneling and ensures an even burn in the future.

2. Optimal Candle Placement

Where you place your candle significantly affects its scent throw. To maximize fragrance:

  • Burn in a small to medium-sized room (up to approximately 15m² or 160 sq. ft.) with minimal drafts.
  • Place on a heat-resistant, level surface away from open windows, fans, or air vents that can disperse the scent too quickly.
  • Avoid overly large, open spaces as the scent may struggle to fill the room effectively.

3. Trim the Wick

An untrimmed wick can cause soot buildup on the tin or create an uneven burn, affecting the scent throw and burn quality.

A properly trimmed wick ensures a steady, even burn and prevents excessive soot or smoking.

  • Before each burn, trim the wick to approximately 5mm (1/4 inch).
  • A longer wick can cause a large, flickering flame that burns the wax too quickly, reducing fragrance longevity.

4. Burn Time & Safety

For the best performance and safety:

  • Burn your candle for 2–4 hours at a time to maintain an even wax pool.
  • Never burn for more than 4 hours in one sitting, as this can cause overheating and shorten the candle’s lifespan.
  • Always extinguish the flame safely, using a candle snuffer or gently blowing it out.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets and never leave a burning candle unattended.

5. Storing Your Candle

Extreme temperatures can affect candle performance. While heat can soften the wax and weaken the scent, extreme cold can cause the wax to contract and affect how evenly it burns.

To maintain the best fragrance:

  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.
  • Keep the lid on when not in use to preserve the scent and protect the wax from dust.

6. Why Does My Candle Seem Weak in Scent?

If you feel your candle isn’t giving off enough scent, consider these factors:

  • Size of the room – Rooms larger than approximately 15m² (160 sq. ft.) may dilute the scent more than smaller rooms.
  • Drafts & airflow – Too much airflow disperses fragrance too quickly.
  • Nose fatigue – Your sense of smell adjusts over time. Try stepping out of the room and returning to notice the scent again. Different people perceive scents differently, and factors such as allergies, colds, or even diet can temporarily affect your ability to smell certain fragrances.
  • Proper burn time – A candle that isn’t burned long enough won’t allow the fragrance oils to fully release, preventing the full scent throw from developing.
  • Environmental conditions – Factors such as humidity, air conditioning, or ventilation can affect how well a scent carries through the air. Dry air can cause fragrance to dissipate quickly, while high humidity can suppress it.
  • Cold Throw vs. Hot Throw – Your candle may smell stronger when unlit (cold throw) due to the concentration of fragrance oils at the surface. The scent will fully release when the wax is melted (hot throw), so allow it to burn long enough to develop.
  • Layering Scents – Enhance the fragrance experience by burning multiple candles with complementary scents in different areas of the room.
  • Refreshing the Scent – If your candle has been sitting for a while, gently warming the top layer of wax with a hairdryer before lighting can help revive the fragrance.
  • Testing in Different Rooms – Some spaces naturally hold scent better than others. Try burning your candle in different locations to find the best scent dispersion.

7. Reusing Your Candle Tin

Once your candle has burned down to about 1cm of wax, stop using it for safety reasons. Clean out the tin with warm soapy water and repurpose it for:

  • Small storage (jewelry, coins, spices)
  • Plant pots
  • DIY candle refills
  • Travel storage (small toiletries, first aid supplies)
